Kantha Inspired Landscape


Last month, my friend Sara was running a drop-in workshop at Jubilee Library in Brighton as part of the BBC Get Creative weekend. She asked me to give her a hand, and it was a fun morning, with beginners, as well as those with some quilting experience, popping in. There was a choice of Brighton inspired projects using fusible applique or Kantha style stitching. I hadn't sewn any Kantha since the City and Guilds days back in 2006/7 (which I did alongside Sara), and it made me remember how much I loved it.

So when I was looking through my landscape photos last weekend I immediately knew I had to make a little Kantha inspired panel. All I needed was two small pieces of fabric, perle thread and a chenille needle. After drawing the outlines the rest of the process was hugely satisfying. It is like colouring-in and very meditative to do. As I finished this little piece I started to have lots of ideas for future ones - playing with scale, using a dark background developing stitches...
